Meet Joshua

Joshua from Phoebe Sexton on Vimeo.

This is the final project for my Picture Story class, the capstone course in the Photojournalism sequence. I will come back and talk about this when I've had a little more sleep and a little more time, but for now, let me say that I think this is the best work I've done so far in my career. I don't think I could have shot this when I first got to Mizzou or even at the beginning of my semester. I plan to keep working with my subject on a long-term project and am forever grateful for his openness and candidness. I appreciate the trust he had in me to tell his story and hope I did it justice.

Phoebe, thank you so much for this piece of work. Stories like Joshua's are compelling and important. I appreciate so much his courage in allowing you to tell his story, and your sensitivity in sharing this work.

Bravo. You told this story beautifully, and I was hooked the whole time. The amount of access you got and the obvious trust that you built into your relationship are just wonderful. Thanks so much.

I don't comment very much on the blogs of people I don't know personally, but this was just too good; can't wait to see what you do next.

Beautiful and compelling piece of work. It was thoughtful, considerate and allowed him, rather than you, tell the story. Well done.

Great Job, phoebe. I think this is what we came to Mizzou to be capable of. Your diligence and his openness made for an incredible story.

That was a great piece. The access you had into Joshua's life was incredible and the simple way you told the story - black & white with audio - made it all the more compelling. I felt like for 3+ minutes, I really got an insight into a lot of different aspects of his life and all of the various things that he struggles with on a daily basis. Great job.

Phoebe, Simply amazing. I think the piece respectfully told a very moving part of Joshua's story.
